Nile crocodile, a man-eater, discovered in Florida
MIAMI, Florida â Researchers believe four crocodiles found in the state are Nile crocodiles, an invasive species that can grow up to 21 feet long and weigh up to 1 1/2 tons. The four suspected Nile crocodiles were discovered in South Miami-Dade county since 2009, the Christian Science Monitor reports. Some researchers believe more of the crocodiles could be living in Florida, and they pose a threat to larger animals. CSM reports the Nile crocodile is known for its aggressive behavior, with 4..>> view originalSwarms of Octopus Are Taking Over the Oceans
Something strange is happening to the oceans. As coral reefs wither and fisheries collapse, octopuses are multiplying like mad. As soon as they perceive weakness, they will amass an army and invade the land, too. Okay, that last statement is probably pure paranoia. But it is a bit unsettling that cephalopods—squids, octopuses, cuttlefish—are booming, and scientists don’t know why. An analysis published today in Current Biology indicates that numerous species across the world’s oceans have incr..>> view originalAncient Solar Superflare Suggests Risks for Mars Missions
A catastrophic superflare from the sun, like the one in the year 775, would put astronauts at risk for lethal doses of radiation, new research suggests. This 2012 coronal mass ejection resulted in a solar flare aimed away from Earth. Credit: Credit: NASA/SDO/AIA When a powerful "superflare" from the sun scoured the solar system more than 1,200 years ago, it apparently had little effect on Earth's inhabitants — but today's astronauts wouldn't be so lucky, scientists said. A fossil from a newly discovered animal that didn’t look like it was supposed to has given scientists a window into the evolutionary period just after the worst mass extinction event the planet has ever known. The new species, an ichthyosaur named Sclerocormus parviceps, was a marine reptile dating to the Lower Triassic, and it looked nothing like other ichthyosaurs scientists have studied. The giant tortoises of the Galapagos might all look similar, but the ones found in the eastern part of the island are actually a new species. There are only about 250 of them left. So this discovery has immediate conservation implications.
